Gopher is an old protocol (more than HTTP), the best for file sharing. Check the directory Just a point on Gopher: why and what for... in my gopherspace for more information.

You can access gopher holes with many browsers : mozilla (firefox, camino, iceweasel, seamonkey, etc), arachne, lynx, gopher client, etc. For more informations of which browsers are available (and why you shoudn't use Internet Explorer), check this page on Floodgap's Gopher Systems.
